Number the Stars (10-13)

In Chapter 12, there were several references to stars. Why do you think the author mentions stars? Why do you think the book is called Number the Stars?

  1. The author mentioned stars as a symbol for freedom. As mentioned on page 98, the stars come and go. Freedom relates to the book because since several Jews were being captured and killed during the Holocaust, they needed freedom to force the Nazis to stop the madness that was going on. I think that the book is called Number the Stars because since so many Jewish people were being captured and killed because of prejudice, there were tons of Stars of David that were going around. What the Nazis should have done was actually number, or count, the stars (since there were several million) and realize that what they were doing was sick and cruel. Stars can symbolize many feelings, and they can be used as similes or metaphors. In this case, stars really make a good comparison for the book.

  2. I agree with number 7. The author did mention stars as a symbol of freedom. On page 98, the stars come and go. Freedom relates to the book because many Jews did not have the right of freedom, though the Nazis do. I think the book is called Number the Stars because so many Jews are either hiding, escaping, or dying. And the Jews who have these plans are more than many. When people look at the stars in the sky, they see the stars have no harm, and have freedom. That is why stars symbolize freedom.

  3. In the book Number The Stars, the author had mentioned stars in the book of chapter 12. There are three reasons why I think that the author mentioned about stars. The first reason is that I think that the author wanted to pointed out that even though there are many stars in the sky, every star is important, just like everybody in the world. Second is that that the stars are important to people in the past. Without them, the travelers in the past would have a more harder way to travel. Third is that there is a star that is a symbol for Jewish people and it is called the Stars of David. The book is called Number The Stars is beucase everyone is important no matter how many people or stars are in the sky or in the earth. Though there is another reason why it is called Number The Stars is that in the book, Ellen says that her mother is scared of the sea beucase it is deep and cold. Annemarie thought that even though her friend's mom is scared of the sea she konws she must go and face her fear. This title might show that the world is big, cruel, and evil. Overall, the stars may stand for many things , but like number 12, I agree that the stars stand for freedom.

  4. The author mentions stars because they are a symbol of freedom. On page 98, the author wrote that stars come and go. I think the author mentioned stars because the Jews had no freedom when the Nazis did. The book is possible called Nummber the Stars because tens of thousands of Jews died, hide, or escaped.

  5. I think that the author mentioned the stars because it might have been a symbol of freedom. As seen on page 98, the stars come and go. Freedom relates to this book because most Jewish people did not have freedom, were being captured, and being put to death. I think that this book is called Number the Stars because since so many people were being killed, committing suicide, and being captured, that they were massive amounts of Stars of David being tattooed on people's hands. The Nazis should have just realize that what they are doing is just sick and cruel.

  6. The author of the book mentioned that stars were a symbol of freedom. On page 98, the author mentioned about how starts come and then go. The book was called Number the Stars because, since many Jewish people were put to death by the Nazi soldiers, they felt as if they don't have any freedom, and when they look at the stars, they see that they can be stars, to come, but also to be able to go. When the Jews look at the stars, they see that stars are free, doing whatever they want, since so many Jews saw the stars, somehow, the all have the same thoughts of being freed, having freedom. That's the overall reason why i think the book is called Number the Stars, and also why stars symbolize freedom

  7. I, like numbers 07 and 12, also believe that the stars are a symbol of freedom and hope. The stars always look so free and jumbled up, as if they could do anything they want. The stars also symbolize hope because when they look up at the stars, they feel like their is a world of possibilities. I believe the author mentions stars because in Denmark, all of the people's rights and freedom(especially the Jewish)are taken away, so they all want freedom from the Nazis. I believe the book is called Number the Stars because the whole book is based on Denmark's fight for freedom from the Nazis. Annemarie, her family, and the Rosens all fight hopefully for freedom and independence.

  8. I think the author mentions stars because
Annemarie believes it is hopeless and impossible to number the stars as there are too many. The world is too big, and the Nazis can't catch all the Jews. I think the book is called Number the Stars because the Jews had to wear a Star of David to show they were Jews. In a way, the Nazis were numbering the Jews with the stars. It could also be a reference to the psalm read on page 86 and 87. In this way, it means that only God could number the stars, not the Nazis.

  9. I too agree with number 7 and 12. The author mentioned stars as a symbol for freedom. Freedom relates to the book because since many Jews were being captured and killed. I think that the book is called Number the Stars because since so many Jewish people were being captured and killed , there were tons of Stars of David tattoos. What the Nazis should have done was count (the people that they were killing, so that they would realize the cuelness in they actions against the Jewish. Stars are free and they can symbolize the freedom of people, and in this case the Jewish.

  10. In Chapter Twelve, Peter Neilson reads an excerpt of a psalm in the Bible, which includes the quote "he who numbers the stars one by one". Also, "number the stars" could be a metaphor of how Germans identified Jews, who would have the Star of David stamped onto their hand or sewn into their clothing. The "stars" symbolize the Jews, and how it is impossible for the Germans to number them all.

  11. I think there were several references to stars in Chapter 12 because David's Star is the symbol of the Jewish people. I believe that the book called Number the Stars is titled this way because the book is about Jews, and how many of them died at the hands of the Nazis. Hitler killed tens of thousands of the Jewish, and the stars symbolized the Jews when they were alive and when they weren't, because they turned into stars in heaven, where they were free from the Nazis.

  12. The author mentions the stars as a sign of freedom. The book relates to freedom because the setting of the book is when the Nazis were killing many Jewish people. I think the book is called Number the Stars because in the book there are a lot of Stars of David and the book is about saving Ellen(who is a Jewish person) since the Nazis are trying to kill all the Jewish people.

  13. The author mentions the stars because they are a sign of freedom. This book relates to freedom because it is about a girl named Annemarie who tries to help her Jewish friend Ellen from the Nazis. I think the book is called Number the Stars because it mentions that the phrase Number the Stars comes from the Jewish bible.

  14. The author mentioned stars as a symbol of being brave. Just as the stars come and go so does the braveness inside of you. There was also some foreshadowing on how she was going to be brave and take the basket to her uncle. I think the book is called Number the Stars because the Nazis numbered the Jewish people to be able to identify them.

  15. In the book Number the Stars, I think there were several refrences to stars because it stood as a symbol of freedom for the Jewish people. The Nazis would take control of the Jews and the star was a symbol for being a Jewish person. I think the book is called Number the Stars because the Nazis capture and kill many Jews and wanted to symbol many stars for the deaths of the people. Nice job 1 and 12!

  16. The author mentions the stars because they were a sign of freedom for the Jews. The Jews believed that the Star of David might help them from the Nazis. In the book, a girl named Annemarie helps her Jewish friend Ellen and her family escape from the Nazis. The book is called Number the Stars becaue it comes from the Jewish bible. The quote "he who numbers the stars one by one" comes from the Jewish bible.

  17. I think vthe author mentions stars because the Jews believed they were a sign of freedom. I believe the book is called number the stars because the book is about trying to find freedom, which is what stars resemble.

  18. I think the author mentions stars because the Jewish people believed that they were signs of freedom. On page 98, the author mentions that the stars come and go. I believe the book is called number the stars because the Jews are dying and floating up to the stars.

  19. I believe that the author, Lois Lowry, mentions stars because stars stood as a symbol of freedom and independence to the Jewish. The reason for having stars mentioned in this book is because at the time, the Navis were slaying many Jews, and because Annemarie's best friend, Ellen, was Jewish, she and her family tried their very best to lead both Ellen and her family to freedom. This book is titled Number The Stars because they show how stars can represent the freedom of every single thing out there, and because in the Jewish bible, the phrase "Number The Stars" is mentioned.

  20. I believe that the author mentions stars for the symbolical lesson of freedom. Everybody understands that the stars are constantly coming and going. How does freedom represent this book? Several Jewish people were kidnapped and killed in the Holocaust and freedom was the only way to stop the blasphemy. This book is called "Number the Stars" because due to prejudice and cruel abuse, Jewish people were marked with Stars of Davids to be killed by Nazi soldiers. The title also states that every star has its own meaning and story, just like we humans do. So therefore, this can be a good metaphor or reference for the book.

  21. Great response number 7!! I think that the author mentions stars because they were a sign of freedom, in how the nazis have freedom, but the jews dont, and how there are so many stars, and so many nazis.I also think that the book is called number the stars because of the star of David, which is the jewish symbol.

  22. I think the author mentions stars because the Jewish belived that they were sighns of frddom like the sighn the jewish had to have a tatoo or a necklace all jewish people must wear. I think the book is called number the stars because all the jewish people had to hae a sybol to show they're jewish.

  23. I think the author mentions stars because the cross for the Jews is the Star of David. Also I think the book is called number the stars because The German soldiers or Nazis are hunting down all the Jews so that they could torment and tear their lives apart.

  24. The author mentions that stars represent freedom. I think the book is called number the stars because so many Jewish people want freedom like the stars.

  25. I think the author means number of the stars because there were plenty of Jews that got captured and killed. What I am saying is that the author means the number if jews that have been capture and killed that seeked freedom.

  26. The author mentions stars because, in the book, Peter reads a random page in the bible that mentions the stars and it describes the fact that the star of david is the Jewish symbol. The reason the author called the book Number The Stars is that the Nazis want to eliminate all the Jews so it is like trying to find all the stars (Jewish people get stamps with the star of david to let the Nazis know they are Jewish). The Nazis believed in Hitler when he said that eliminating all the Jews will solve all the problems. That is why they try a way to get rid of the Jews. Another reason why they call it Number The Stars is that it mention in the bible lines that Peter read is "O praise the Lord.
How good it is to sing psalms to our God!
    How pleasant to praise him!
    The Lord is rebuilding Jerusalem;
he gathers in the scattered sons of Israel.
It is he who heals the broken in spirit
    and binds up their wounds,
he who 'numbers the stars' one by one . . ."
The title is in the last line, number the stars.

  27. #13, You are correct. The title was taken from that verse in the bible.

  28. The novel is called Number The Stars because of how Jewish people had the Star of David imprinted on their clothing or tattooed on their skin so that the German Nazis could identify them and put them to death. The author mentions stars in Chapter 12 when Peter Neilson reads a psalm from the bible, and one of the lines is "he who numbers the stars one by one". Also, the stars are a symbol of freedom. The stars represent freedom because they are probably the free spirits of the Jews that were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust and World War II in general.

  29. the author mentions stars in this book, because the star is a symbol of freedom and also the star of David is the Jewish symbol. The book is called Number the Stars because the germans stamped most of the Jewish people so they knew who was Jewish and who was not, so it is like counting all of the stars, and there are a lot of stars so it's very hard to count all the Jews.

  30. I think the author mentions the stars in chapter 7 because the Jews wanted freedom from Germany. I think the book is called Number the Stars because the Jewish People wear stars on their clothing.

  31. The author named the book " Number the Stars "
because the Jewish star represents that you are a Jewish person. The star represents freedom to Jewish people. The star also represents David.
