Number the Stars: Chapters 14 - Afterword
In the afterword, the author explains the events in the novel that really took place. What are some of the events of Number the Stars that were based on historical truths? Give a short, detailed description of three of these events.
An event in Number the Stars that is based on historical truth is the handkerchief. The handkerchief was designed by Danish scientists during world war 2. The main purpose of it was to numb the noses of the German dogs used to track down escaping Jews. It was a linen piece of cloth with rabbit blood to attract the dogs, and cocaine to numb the dogs' noses momentarily. Another event in the novel that is based on historical truth is the Nazis occupying Denmark during world war 2. World war 2 was happening in the story at that time, and the viscous German soldiers, known as the "Nazis", were conquering many places, including Denmark. The third event in the story that is based on historical truth is the Jewish fleeing to Sweden because of the Nazis. During world war 2, the Nazis had started to arrest all the Jews in the places they conquered due to the terrible belief that the Jews were responsible for Germany's misfortunes.
ReplyDeleteSeveral occurrences that happened in the book Number the Stars were based on historical truths. World War Two really happened, it began at September 1st, 1938 through September 2nd, 1945. World War Two took over many countries, like Lithuania, Luxembourg, and Norway. The packet that contain a hankie that Annmarie gave to Uncle Henrik really did exsist. It contained a drug that was powerful enough to ruin a dog's sense of smell. Shop owners, families, and even fishermen carried this hankerchief around. Over the time being the Nazi soldiers were angry that the Jewish people were going off to Sweden that they used dogs to track on Jews. Also, there were many "freedom fighters" but another words were the Resistance group. Peter was one of the Resistance group in the book, and just like young people like him, risked his life to the Jews. Resistance groups were going on in World War 2 and they protested for freedom.
ReplyDeleteSome of the events in Number the Stars that really happened are the Nazis getting angry for the Jews running away. Another event that happened was the handkerchief. The Nazis, after getting extremely angry, started using dogs to sniff out the Jews, but the freedom fighters were one step ahead of them. Using the handkerchief, which was composed of dried rabbit's blood and Cocaine, fisherman and shopkeepers could hide Jews running from the Nazi soldiers. The handkerchief drew the dogs attention to it and when they sniffed at it, they would temporarily lose their sense of smell. Another event that happened were the resistance fighters getting caught and executed in public. They wrote letters to their families and friends telling them that they would be alright.
ReplyDeleteThree true events in Number the Stars are when King Christian X surrendered to the Nazis, when the Danes sank their own entire navy in the Copenhagen harbor when the Germans came to take it over, and the little handkerchief Annemarie had carried to her uncle. Denmark let the Germans take over their country because, as quoted on page 134, "the country was small and undefended, with no army of any size." Many, many people would have lost their life if they had tried to fight the Nazis. Therefore, they gave in, and the Nazis took over the whole area. It is also true that the navy blew up their whole fleet of army ships when the Nazis tried to take them. Perhaps they decided that they would rather destroy their entire water force than let the Nazis control the boats. They had exploded all their vessels, and the sound had awakened the fictional Kirsti Johansen. She had been told that the noise was just fireworks for her birthday. The handkerchief that Annemarie brought to her uncle, too, is real. Because Sweden was not under Nazi control, fishers in Denmark were attempting to smuggle Jews to Sweden. The Nazis had suspected this, so they have been using police dogs to sniff the little fishing boats to find any hidden Jews. Therefore, Swedish scientists have lokked for and found a way to once more foil Hitler's awful plans. They invented a substance made of dried rabbit's blood and cocaine. The smell of the rabbit's blood attracted the police dogs, and when they sniffed at it , the cocaine caused their sense of smell to be temporarily destroyed. Nearly every fisherman had one of these handkerchiefs, and many Jews were saved because of this.
ReplyDeleteThree events that were really true in the book Number the Stars is when World War II happened, the handkerchief could ruin a dog's sense of smell, and when the Jews were fleeing from the German soldiers. The handkerchief was designed to attract dogs, but when they sniff it they lose their sense of smell. Scientists made that by planting dried rabbit's blood, and cocaine into the handkerchief. World War II began on September 1, 1939, and ended on September 2, 1945. At that time, Germany invaded Poland, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, Holland, Latvia, etc. The Jews were fleeing away from the German soldiers/Nazis because they were capturing them, so the soldiers got dogs to sniff, but the protesters were prepared. Also, there was a group called the "Resistance". They were people who would protest against the War.
ReplyDeleteOne event that was based on historical truths in Number the Stars was when Denmark surrendered to Germany in 1940. If it didn't surrender, the country would have been destroyed since it was small and undefended, with no army of any size. Another event that was true was when King Christian X rode alone on his horse unguarded, and when a Nazi soldier asked a Danish teenager who his bodyguard was, he did say all of Denmark is his bodyguard. This story was recorded in one of the documents that still remain from that time. The third event that was based on historical truths was the handkerchief that Annemarie delivered to her Uncle Henrik. The handkerchiefs were used to destroy the dogs' sense of smell. The handkerchiefs contained dried rabbit's blood and cocaine. The dogs were attracted to the chemical, and when they sniffed it, it destroyed their sense of smell.
ReplyDeleteThree events in the story that were true are the Nazis took over Denmark, the handkerchief, and the Resistance. Denmark was small and had little defences. King Christian surrended and blew up his entire navy so the Nazis couldn't use it. The Nazis were in conrol for about five years. The handkerchief was used to temporarily destroy the Nazis dogs sense of smell. It was made from rabbit blood and cocaine. The blood attracted the dogs to smell it, and when they did, the cocaine numbed their sense of smell. The Resistance were made of young and brave people.
ReplyDeleteGreat response 20, you really put some effort into it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThree events in the story that were true are that King Christian X surrendered to the Nazi soldiers, the Danes sank their entire navy in Copenhagen harbor because the German soldiers wanted to take over, and the Nazis were in control for about five years.
ReplyDeleteOne event that was based on historical truths is when Denmark surrendered to the Nazis in 1940. Another event is when the Danes sank their own entire navy in the Copenhagen harbor. A third event is the linen handkerchief. Denmark was small and undefended and had no army of any size, so King Christian surrendered to the German soldiers. The Germans approached to take over the ships for their own use. Many children were woken by the explosions and how the ships burned. The handkerchief was use to destroy the Nazis dogs sense for smell for a time.
ReplyDeleteThe author described the fact that the handkerchiefs were true( when they used it against the dogs so they don't smell as good), the fact that Nazis wanted to eliminate all the Jewish people because of hitler, and when the boy says that Denmark is the king's guard( except that the boy really didn't say that to a guard. Scientists found a way to make dogs not smell for a while by adding rabbit blood and the chemical so the rabbit blood will atract dogs to smell the chemical mixed with blood. Many young men and women were killed because they helped the Jewish people survive the Nazis. The author knew because he asked some friemds and other people information about what happened back then and used it in the story.
ReplyDeleteThree events that is true in the book Number the Stars included that the Danish people loved their kink so much, King Christian X under their the leadership, courage, and integrity. The Danish people probably loved King Christian X so much because the love the king gave them. It was returned back by the love to the king, he was so kind to come down from his palace to greet his people, every single morning. The second event that is also true was that Denmark, a small and undefended country with no army of any single size, surrendered to Germany in 1940. Denmark was so small and since it didn't have any army or any kind, it had no other way but to surrender to the Germany. The third event was that in August 1943, the Danes sank their own entire navy in Copenhagen harbor as the Germans approached to take over the ships for their own use, how selfish the Germans are, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteSome events in Number the Stars that happened in history are the handkerchief, the Nazis took over Denmark, and the Resistance. The handkerchief, which was made from rabbit blood and cocaine, was used to destroy the sense of smell of the Nazis' dogs. Denmark was a small town that had little defenses. Their king surrendered and blew up the Denmark navy so the Nazis couldn't invade it. The Nazis then controlled for five years. The Resistance were brave and young people who didn't listen to the Nazis.
ReplyDeleteThe three things that really happened are that the people used handkerchiefs with the sent of rabbit blood and cocaine to temporarily make the dogs lose their smell like in the book the handkerchief that was hidden in the packet so the dogs wouldn't be able to find the people that were hiding on the boat. The people that were smuggled by the resistance movement to transfer them to neutral Sweden where they would be safe. The resistance was a group of people that would try to save Danish Jews from the Nazis. The second world war really happened and ended in May of 1945 also, in the book the war ended in May of 1945 when Annemarie turned 12. People all over Denmark celebrated their freedom.
ReplyDeleteThe events that are true in this story are that the Nazi's were always in the Jewish peoples space. Another event that is true is that a boy told the Nazi soldiers that Denmark was the kings bodyguard which means that everybody that lives in Denmark will protect the king.
ReplyDeletegreat comment #20 I agree with you 100%
ReplyDeleteThe three true events in "Number the Stars," are that Denmark was invaded by the Nazis/ Germans and the king surrendered which allowed the Nazis to move into Denmark overnight. Handkerchiefs were given to sea captains that ship off Jews. The handkerchiefs were dipped in rabbit blood and coccain which numbs the perfect sense of dogs. Plus, the boy who said that Denmark was the king's bodyguards was true too.
ReplyDeleteThis is an improved version of my origional comment.
The true events in this story are that the Jews space was being invaded. My second event in the story is when the boy told the Nazi soldiers about denmark protecting the king.
ReplyDeleteThe three true events in "Number The Stars" are that Denmark was taken over by the Nazis and Denmark's king surrendered, giving the German soldiers a passage into Denmark. In the August of 1943, the Danish sank their own ships at the Copenhagen harbor to avoid the Nazis taking over them. That night many children were awoken by the sounds. Lastly the handkerchiefs were made to keep the Jews protected, was true.Woven in the handkerchiefs were dried rabbit bloods and cocaine, The powders forced the german dogs to avoid the Jewish people that obtained handkerchiefs.

ReplyDeleteNumber 20, great job responding!!!! The details excel in your response!
ReplyDeleteEvents that really took place in the novel "Number the Stars" are that: Denmark surrendered to the Nazi's under King Cristian's reign for thee exact reasons Papa explained. The Germans then moved in overnight and occupied Danish homes for five years. Also, the Jewish people were really mass murdered in Gas chambers and some escaped their doom by fleeing the country. The handkerchief that the dogs signified really existed as well.
