The Giver (Chapter 10-14)

In Jonas's community, every person and his or her experience are precisely the same. The climate is controlled, and competition has been eliminated in favor of a community in which everyone works only for the common good. What advantages might "Sameness" yield for contemporary communities? Is the loss of diversity worthwhile?

  1. Diversity is good and bad in different ways. One advantage that "Sameness' would bring to a community is that there wouldn't be any stealing, because everyone would have the same belongings, food, and houses. Another advantage of non-diversity is that racism would not exist. Everyone would have the same skin color and have the same religion. There wouldn't be any cultural differences. Jealousy wouldn't exist either. No one would be better than anyone else, and no one would even have a different amount of money than someone else. That brings me to the next question. Is sameness worthwhile? I could go both ways on this one. No diversity would be worthwhile because of the reasons listed above. It wouldn't be worth it because this world would be so... boring. Everything is the same. Food, culture, skin, clothes. There wouldn't even be any color. The only thing that isn't the same is occupations. A world of "Sameness" would be good and bad at the same time.

  2. Different variety is how you express your passions. Without diversity, many people would not be able to express their feelings or passion. Sameness would be a good idea because people would not steal, because they have the same things. Loss of diversity is not worthwile because everything the same would be like a blank piece of paper. People would be exactly alike. Without diversity people would be like lines on a paper; straight, alike, and aligned.

  3. "Sameness" does eliminate many dangers in jealousy and racism. The world wold be very similar. But in The Giver, they take it too far. To distroy all choices, I believe, is just cruel! People need a say in what they want to do, wear, eat, and many other things. It is a necessity to give options. Taking away all choices should not be overdone.

  4. A world that is the same has flaws and advantages. An advantage is that there would be no jealousy. Everyone would be the same and everyone would have the same things. No one will be better or worse than another person. The whole entire community would have the same food, money, and clothes as other people. What would be there to steal? Another good thing is that racism would be nonexistent. Everyone would be the same color and religion. War would not wage across the world either. Each community would have the same resources. But... life that is all the same would be... boring. Same clothes. Same personalities. Same food. Bleh. Lame. NOT FUN WHAT SO EVER. Life without differences has both its good and bad.

  5. "Sameness" itself does tae away the wanting of what other people want, or jealousy. No one would want to steal since they have all the same things. But, losing diversity is not right. We need to be uniquie in some ways. But then agian it could cause stealing. So it is good and bad to have "Sameness".

  6. "Sameness" is a prospect that is sometimes looked forward to and sometimes dreaded. Sometimes, when I am THROUGH with people bragging about their greatness or even about their awfulness, I wish that everyone can be the same. Then they'd have nothing to "brag" about. But there are also times when I am glad there is diversity. People always say that my sister and I look like twins. If we were really, we would be the same height too. This is when I'm glad we're different...people already insult me enough when they say I look like her!!!

  7. Sameness can have its benefits. For example, there would be no stealing, lying, and cheating. This is because that everyone has the same belongings and no one is jealous of one another. However, I do NOT think that the loss of diversity is worthwhile. Diversity makes life interesting. That way, everyone would have different clothes, different personalities, and different cultures. I think diversity is an important part in everyday life.

  8. Sameness can be good in some cases; however, it can also be disappointing at some time too. If everyone were to be the same bad emotions such as jealousy would be gone.I personally think that sameness can be a very damaging thing. Like in the book The Giver, sameness take a whole other level. Everyone wears, eats, and does the same thing. Just imagine if we all lived in a world like that. Trust me life would get boring in a quick second.

  9. If "Sameness" is included in a community, flaws and advantages would both be available. A flaw would be that no one would have choices. All choices would be made for you. Spouses, children, and callings are all chosen for you. Another flaw is that there would be no color. In the story, The Giver, Jonas, and Gabriel are some of the few that can see color. No one else can. Some advantages, however, are that since everyone would not be able to see color, racism would be diminished. Also, Robbery would be nonexistent because all would have the same items at their own dwellings. Jealousy and bragging would also not have been introduced to the world. All in all, "Sameness" has flaws and advantages.

  10. Sameness falls right between the middle of good and bad. Some good things about sameness are that it would eliminate jealousy, because you would not want anything from someone since you have the same things as them, danger such as robberies would also not occur, since everyone has the same thing, no one would want to steal. Also, war is mostly about having differences or jealousy, so with sameness there would be no war. There are also bad things that could happen with sameness. I think it's typically cruel to eliminate all choices to citizens of the world. I love being able to wake up each morning and be able to ask myself, "Should I wear my blue shirt, or my pink shirt?" Having an option makes you feel more in control of yourself. In the story, The Giver, Everyone wears the same thing, eats the same thing, sees the same thing, and does the same thing. With everyone in this community doing the same thing, i feel as if it were one person controlling an entire community as one, therefore, there is no self control.

  11. Sometimes, sameness can be a good thing. There would be no jealousy, madness, sadness, etc. But, bad things can also be a pain too! I think it is cruel to take away choices of the citizens. In The Giver, everyone is the same, they eat the same, dress, drink, etc. Also, you can't even pick your own spouse! Sameness can sometimes be good, but I think it is a bad idea. It's like one person is controlling everybody.

  12. I believe a world of "sameness" would be just as bad as it is good. I believe that the community was trying to create a perfect community and that it seems like many of our problems as humans have a source to diversity. Such as racism, and bragging. If everyone was the same, there would be no bragging and wanting what another person has because everything you have is the same. However, I believe that diversity is something that should be kept. It makes us feel special, and come on, who would like to have the same exact birthday as everyone else? It's a confusing concept, to think of either having a comfy prison, like in the community, or a free land of chaos. I actually feel that if I knew what a free world was, unlike the people of the community, I would prefer that better. So I must say that diversity should be kept, but I guess sameness has a few benefits.

  13. Sameness is a very interesting part about this book. It can give us feelings of jealousy and some types of anger, but it can give us a fresh perspective. Even though jealousy and anger are horrible feelings to is what gives life passé and interest. In the book, The Giver, they create sameness because of self-control and just as 17 way saying everyone is exactly the same with sameness and it is SO boring being the same. without being different we couldn't learn from one another, and that is crazy.

  14. In a world of Sameness, there would be obvious benefits. These benefits include the eradication of racism, because everyone would have the same skin color and all be equal, the eradication of jealousy, since everyone is at an equal level as others, and there would also be no stealing. If everyone owns the same items, what's the point of stealing from someone else if you also have that item? However, despite these benefits, Sameness is not worthwhile at all. Besides the common thought that everything being identical is going to be "boring", without Sameness, there would be all loss of ambition and innovation. Everyone will have the same thoughts and personalities, and of course, some people have to stand out from others and innovate, thinking of new things that will benefit the world. Without ambition and innovation, society can never advance, or move forward. Our world will be completely static, and that won't be very good, will it.

  15. Like everything else, a world of sameness would have its pros and cons. If sameness were to become reality, there would be no more discrimination, judgment of others, or racism, and these are all obvious problems in our society today. No one would be afraid of being an outcast if no one were separated from one another simply because of the way they dress, the color of their skin, or how they look. Though those are simply the pros. Now onto the cons. If there were no diversity, no difference in appearance, everyone would lose their individuality. If everything were the same, people would start to lose their originality, be it the clothes they wear or the art they draw. Everything would be plain. Unoriginal. Specific. Not only that, everyone would have the exact same mindset, and the norm would never change. Ever. not the slightest difference in the norm of their mind be it after one year or after a thousand years. With that, no one would be who they are any longer. It would be like taking one person and multiplying them. Still, nothing is perfect. Nor will it ever be.

  16. Sameness is what makes the Community a different world from Earth. Yes, sameness involves having world peace, but it also has its negatives. I don't think I would at least live without color. Because without color, there's no diversity. And with no diversity, our world will fall under the burden of sameness, and there will be no love, no hate, and lastly, no pain. Yes, pain is, well, painful, but it makes us who we are today. Pain, hate, love, and other emotions build up our character. The loss of diversity is NOT worthwhile because I feel strongly that diversity and emotions make us all humans. I have no idea what Jonas and his friends actually are, but all I can say is that they have changed from human to I don't even know what.

  17. I think sameness is good sometimes and also bad at the same time. For example, sameness will get rid of jealousy. Everyone has the same things, so there won't be any stealing. But I think the world needs to be diverse. I don't want sameness. If the world is diverse, it won't be boring because the world isn't the same all of the time. That is why I don't want the world to have sameness.

  18. Many benefits come with sameness. There will be no jealousy, warfare, and pain. In todays society, the loss of diversity is not worth it. However, in The Giver, they have never known the feeling we have today. They have never felt pain, love, and the pleasures of life. The community does not know diversity, so sameness is OK for them.

  19. Good for sameness?Or bad? It really depends. Sameness always has advantages, but at the same time, it's disadvantages. I think that diversity should be worth keeping because even thought it can lead to problems like jealousy and other things like that, but people can be be diverse, unique, each person can experience different things. They can share different feelings. This alone can create a community where everyone is like a family. Sameness, think about it, it is like counting a bunch of people, then losing track because everyone look the same as the other. Yes, there are advantages such as no pain, a society that is perfect because you don't have to decide anything on your own. In the end, everyone is all the same.

  20. There are many ways that sameness can help. Their are also many ways it can be bad. One way it can be good is that there is no jealosy. A bad hing that can come is that life will be very dull and boring because their is no suprises the are all th same. This is wy sameness is good or even bad.

  21. "Sameness" both has advantages and flaws. Advantages include the fact that no one would kill put of jealousy, because everyone is the same. Also no one would steal for everyone has the same possessions. However, if everyone was exactly the same, life would boring, dull, and gray. You wouldn't experience feelings good or bad. That can both be a good thing and a bad thing.

  22. Sameness can help in many ways, and it can be bad in many ways, too. One way it can be good is that everybody isn't jealous of one another. No one has better clothes or better shoes. One bad thing about sameness is that no one is unique. Life would be dull and boring and plain. Sameness can be bad and good.

  23. Sameness makes everyone feel equal and no one will feel better or more stronger than others. It also has its cons. It makes things boring and too predictable. Life wouldn't be right with sameness. But still no one will have the need to still or kill or even die for.
